New State Border Crossing Posts (PLBN) have been proposed to be established in Papua’s Pegunungan Bintang and Keerom districts, which will significantly accelerate economic growth through Indonesia’s eastern frontier.
During a coordination meeting organized by the National Border Management Agency (BNPP) on Monday, 10 November 2025, at Horison Hotel in Abepura, the plan was made public.
The construction of border posts falls under a national strategy program administered by the BNPP to improve border governance, mobility, and growth in deprived frontier areas. The meeting was attended by Pegunungan Bintang Regent Spei Yan Bidana, who strongly reaffirmed the project and highlighted its significance to the welfare of the inhabitants living along the southern border with Papua New Guinea.
The Border Post is not explicitly for checking—but now it will serve as a new center of economic growth,” he stated. “The PLBN will make a difference to the trade and ventures of the Pegunungan Bintang and other places.” He highlighted the region’s untapped economic potential, noting opportunities beyond the mining sector.
There is a rich source of resources, and we should not limit its use to just the minefields. “We have extraordinary natural resources—gold deposits, coffee plantations, and ecotourism potential,” he noted. “The PLBN will help us develop and promote these assets to benefit local communities.”
Also attending the meeting were Dr. Nurdin, Deputy for Border Management at BNPP; Keerom Regent Piter Gusbager; and senior representatives from several ministries and government agencies.
